Milk is packed with rich nutrients that fuel your body, such as calcium, protein, vitamins and minerals. With 500,000 cows producing more than 10.2 billion pounds of milk annually, Pennsylvania ranks 7th in milk production.

Pennsylvania is second nationally in the number of dairy farms with 485,000 head of cattle on 6,200 farms. PA is second in the nation in butter and swiss cheese production. The Pennsylvania dairy industry provides 52,000 jobs across the commonwealth and generates $14.7 billion in annual revenue.

Make Your Own Butter!

jar for butter.jpg Items needed:

  1.  Glass jar, size of your choice
  2.  Heavy whipping cream
  3.  A pinch of salt

Instructions:

  1.  Fill jar halfway with heavy whipping cream
  2.  Add a small pinch of salt to jar
  3.  Seal jar and shake for approximately 10 minutes
  4.  About halfway through shaking, check the contents of your jar, the liquid you see is buttermilk, feel free to taste it!
  5.  Return the lid and continue to shake, once your contents are solid you have butter!

  1.  You should have three servings of dairy every day! Milk, cheese and yogurt are great ways to receive your needed nutrients of dairy!
  2.  Did you know eating nutritious dairy foods, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt, cottage cheese, and sour cream improves bone health, especially in children and adolescents. Dairy Products also help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, Type 2 diabetes, and lower blood pressure in adults.
  3.  Milk contains nine essential nutrients including calcium, riboflavin, potassium, protein, protein, phosphorus, Vitamins A and D, Vitamin B12.
  4.  Look for code 42 on dairy products to see if the product was produced in Pennsylvania.
  5.  Look for the PA Preferred logo to ensure your product was made locally in Pennsylvania.
