Pennsylvania Department of Transportation
PennDOT's mission is to maintain and improve the network of roughly 40,000 miles of state-owned roads and roughly 25,000 state-owned bridges, 34 fixed route transit systems, 125 public use airports, 243 private-use airports, 284 private-use heliports, three ports and the privately-owned network of more than 5,600 miles of freight railroad lines. Fuel taxes and various transportation fees support construction and maintenance on another 78,000 miles of municipal and county roads, along with 6,400 local bridges. Connecting Pennsylvania to the global economy, as well as improving our quality of life, investing in all modes is critical.
When winter weather is in the forecast and precipitation is likely, PennDOT recommends limiting travel and staying at home if possible. Employers and workers are also encouraged to consider teleworking if feasible.
Motorists can check conditions on state-owned roadways, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, by visiting www.511pa.com. 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 1,000 traffic cameras. 511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.
