Virtual Panel Discussion: Stories of Dairy Innovation

This one-hour event will feature inspiring stories and innovative business advancements from three of the PA Dairy Investment Program awardees. The event is free, and no registration is required.

The American Chestnut: How Biotechnology Can be Applied to Conservation

William Powell, Ph.D., Director, American Chestnut Research & Restoration Project, SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, NY

The American chestnut was once a common, economically, and culturally important keystone species within its range in the eastern forest, but was devastated by an invasive pathogen.  Over the past century, many techniques have been applied to try and restore this important tree with only partial or no success. Today we have newer biotechnology tools that in many ways are ideal for conservation and restoration. I will describe how the tools of genetic engineering, combined with traditional breeding, can help restore the American chestnut trees.

"Undeniably Dairy Shake-Off" Celebrity Milkshake Contest

American Dairy Association North East

Six media teams from across the state will be competing for first place in the People's Choice category in the Undeniably Dairy Shake-Off milkshake contest. On Wednesday, January 13, viewers will be able to see media personalities representing WHP (CBS), WHTM (ABC),

WPMT (FOX) all in the Harrisburg, Lancaster, York region, and WTAJ (CBS) Altoona, WBRE & WYOU (NBC-CBS) in Wilkes-Barre, and WXTU-FM in Philadelphia present and describe their original milkshake creation streamed live on American Dairy Association North East's Facebook page. Viewers will then have until Friday, January 15 to vote for the team whose milkshake they'd most like to recreate. The winner of the Undeniably Dairy Shake-Off will be announced on Saturday, January 16.

With only about 4,000 registered Guernseys in Pennsylvania, Maple Bottom Farm, outside Dawson in Fayette and Westmoreland counties, is working to raise the profile and increase the number in the Guernsey breed. Victoria Baker of Maple Bottom Farm explains the fascinating reason Guernsey milk is a golden color, why they are forming a Guernsey coop with other breeders, and how Maple Bottom Farm has diversified its operation to keep it a profitable dairy farm into the future.

Van has over twenty years of professional experience.  A graduate of The Restaurant School in Philadelphia, Van has worked and trained in Paris and New York City. Van has also studied the art of creating sugar flowers with internationally renowned sugar artist Ron Ben-Israel.  Van serves several five-star hotels in Philadelphia, with jaw-dropping cake art.  he also competed in Season 2 Food Network's "Cake Wars" in 2016 and competed in the 2018 season of Food Network's "Wedding Cake Championship".
