Solar Energy and Agriculture: New Opportunities

What are "agrivoltaics" and what types of new farming enterprises are showing up under solar arrays in the Northeast U.S. This session will explore what is driving solar energy in PA, some of the dual use ag options, and management considerations behind these systems. The discussion will offer an early look at some of the unique farming practices deployed in conjunction with solar farming operations. It will also include a virtual tour of select utility scale solar sites in PA Speakers will include Amanda Eyers -DEP, Dave Hartman - Penn State Extension, and Tom Murphy -PSU Marcellus Center.

Panel Discussion: Career Exploration

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture

Panelists from six high-demand agricultural occupations will come together to discuss the various career opportunities in agriculture.  Panelists will include professionals in culinary, agriculture equipment mechanics, large animal veterinary services, farming, hydroponics, and horticulture.  Students, teachers and parents will have the opportunity to hear directly from those with experience in the field and learn about the educational and training requirements of the industry as well as information on current opportunities and projected job openings.

Since precolonial times, agriculture has been deeply woven into the fabric of Pennsylvania's history and culture. Pennsylvania Farming presents the first history of Pennsylvania agriculture in than more sixty years and offers a completely new perspective. Sally McMurry goes beyond a strictly economic approach and considers the diverse forces that helped shape the farming landscape, from physical factors to cultural repertoires to labor systems. Above all, the people who created and worked on Pennsylvania's farms are placed at the center of attention. More than 150 photographs inform the interpretation, which offers a sweeping look at the evolution of Pennsylvania's agricultural landscapes right up to the present day.

PA Hemp Steering Committee:  Developing a Systems View of Hemp in the Commonwealth

The mission of the PA Hemp Steering Committee is to advance the hemp industry in Pennsylvania and provide counsel and guidance to the PA Department of Agriculture on this emerging opportunity for the Commonwealth.  The Committee is organized into 4 subcommittees: Farmer & Processor Education & Outreach; Supply Chain & Market Development; Research Opportunities & Needs; and Policy & Regulation.  In this session, members of the Committee's Leadership Team will discuss their vision for the Pennsylvania hemp industry and their efforts to collaboratively develop an "Economic & Workforce Development Roadmap" with the PA Department of Agriculture and the community of those involved in the Commonwealth's hemp industry (from farmers, to processors, to product designers, to merchandisers, to consumers).

Mandisa Horn, Owner and Executive Chef, Horn O' Plenty, Bedford

Mandisa Horn was born and raised in Bedford County, in the southwestern part of the Pennsylvania.  She and her husband own and run a family farm that has belonged to the Horn family for four generations. In 2011 Mandisa opened Horn O Plenty Freshtaurant which is located just down the road from the farm. Horn O Plenty specializes in local and farm fresh food, and in using a wood fired oven for cooking and baking. Mandisa is not only the owner but also the head chef of the restaurant.
